Benefits of Working Out Outdoors | Macros Inc

Summer, for most of us, is just around the corner, and temperatures are rising. That means one thing: It’s easier to get your workout done outside.

I live in Barcelona in a Mediterranean climate with very mild winters, hot summers and an average of over 300 days of sunshine per year. I am certainly taking advantage of the favorable weather conditions, especially during the winter, spring, and fall, when temperatures are comfortable, and getting out as much as possible. I love hiking, jogging, exercising in the park, playing beach volleyball, paddle boarding, or rollerblading just to name my main go-to outdoor activities.

What Can Working Out Outdoors Mean For You?

It can be anything from walking in the park with family, exercising in your garden or local park, swimming, to running trails up in the hills, biking, or joining a local boot camp class.

I am a huge believer that for something to stick and create consistency with, you need to truly enjoy it. Explore and experiment with various ways to move your body, try new sports or activities, get your family and friends involved… you never know, you might just discover a new hobby and find a passion for something you have never thought of before.

10 Benefits of Working Out Outdoors

Getting outdoors is scientifically proven to be good for us. Even in small amounts, exercising outside can provide us with noticeable benefits.

1. Fresh Air and Improved Oxygen Intake: Outdoor environments provide fresh air, which can enhance oxygen intake during exercise. Increased oxygen levels contribute to improved energy levels and overall respiratory health.

2. Enhanced Mood and Reduced Stress: Outdoor exercise has been associated with improved mood and reduced stress and anxiety levels. The combination of physical activity and exposure to nature can have positive effects on mental well-being.

3. Increased NEAT and fat loss: Keeping non-exercise activity thermogenesis higher is actually one of the most effective ways to help individuals prevent weight gain and increase loss rate.

4. Natural Sunlight and Vitamin D Production: Exposure to natural sunlight allows the body to produce vitamin D. This vitamin is crucial for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation.

5. Improved Sleep: Exposure to natural light during the day, especially in the morning, can help regulate your circadian rhythm and improve sleep quality. Regular outdoor exercise can contribute to a more restful night’s sleep.

6. Variety in Terrain and Muscle Engagement: Outdoor spaces offer diverse terrains, such as trails, parks, hills, stairs, and beaches. This variety can engage different muscle groups and provide a more well-rounded workout compared to indoor exercises.

7. Increased Motivation and Enjoyment: Many people find outdoor settings more motivating and enjoyable than indoor environments. The changing scenery and connection with nature can make workouts feel less like a chore.

8. Social Interaction: Outdoor activities often provide opportunities for social interaction. Whether it’s joining a group fitness class, participating in a team sport, or going for a walk with a friend, exercising outdoors can enhance social connections.

9. Connection with Nature: Being outdoors allows individuals to connect with nature, fostering a sense of tranquility, mindfulness, and overall well-being. Nature has been linked to positive psychological effects.

10. Cost-Effectiveness: Exercising outdoors is often more cost-effective than investing in gym memberships or home gym equipment. Many outdoor activities, such as walking, running, swimming, or bodyweight exercises, require minimal or no equipment at all.

Wrap Up

Don’t forget about these safety factors when exercising outdoors. A good pair of sneakers is a must for any activity. Bring a water bottle to prevent dehydration. Keep your skin protected from the sun by applying a solid layer of your preferred sunblock before you leave home and bring other sun protection such as a hat if exercising during the day.

So, what are you waiting for?

Embrace the outdoors and experience the transformative power of nature on your mind, body, and spirit.
