How to Do the Wide Stance Barbell Box Squat
- Set a box behind you at parallel height and take a stance well wider than shoulder width, toes out.
- Unrack the bar across your upper traps and step back until your heels are about a foot from the box.
- Brace and sit your hips straight back, pushing your knees out hard over your toes.
- Descend with near-vertical shins until you touch the box under control.
- Pause for a beat with everything tight, then drive up through your heels and midfoot.
- Re-set your air and brace at the top before each rep.

Do This
Form Cues
- Set the stance wider than shoulder width with the toes turned out.
- Sit back to the box, keeping the shins close to vertical.
- Push the knees out over the toes the whole way down and up.
- Push your knees out for the entire rep, down and up. The wide stance only works when they track over the toes.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Letting the knees track inward out of the box.
- Relaxing on the box between reps.
- Setting the stance so wide that depth disappears.
- Letting the shins drift forward, which quietly turns it back into a narrow squat with a wide stance.
