How to Do the Barbell Box Squat
- Set a box behind you at a height where your thighs will be parallel to the floor or slightly below when seated.
- Unrack the bar as you would for a normal squat and stand with your heels roughly a foot in front of the box.
- Brace, then sit back and down under control until you touch the box.
- Pause for a full beat on the box, keeping your whole body tight and your shins close to vertical.
- Drive through your midfoot to stand up explosively without rocking forward for momentum.
- Reset your brace at the top before the next rep.

Form Cues
- Sit back to the box under control rather than dropping onto it.
- Pause on the box with tension held, then drive up without rocking.
- Set the box height so your thighs finish at or just below parallel.
- Touch the box like it might break. Sitting down hard compresses the spine and teaches nothing.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Relaxing on the box and rounding the lower back.
- Rocking backward to build momentum for the ascent.
- Slamming down onto the box, which compresses the spine.
- Using a box so low that you have to round your lower back to reach it.
