Bodyweight Box Squat

A squat variation using a box as a depth guide, ideal for learning proper squat form and building confidence at full depth. The box gives instant feedback on depth and takes away the fear of getting stuck at the bottom, which is what holds most beginners back. Once ten controlled reps feel easy, it is the natural stepping stone to goblet and barbell squats.

How to Do the Bodyweight Box Squat

  1. Set a box or bench behind you at a height where your thighs will be roughly parallel when seated.
  2. Stand with your heels about a foot in front of it, feet just wider than your hips.
  3. Reach your arms out in front for balance and push your hips back to begin the descent.
  4. Lower under control until you touch the box lightly.
  5. Without rocking or relaxing, drive through your midfoot to stand back up.
  6. As the movement improves, lower the box to build a deeper squat.

Do This

Form Cues

  • Sit back to the box rather than straight down.
  • Touch the box lightly and stand back up without fully relaxing.
  • Keep the arms out in front for balance if you need them.
  • Treat every rep as if the box might not be there. Control the whole descent yourself.

Avoid This

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping onto the box instead of controlling the descent.
  • Letting the heels lift as you sit back.
  • Rocking backward on the box to build momentum.
  • Staying at the same box height forever instead of progressing lower as control improves.
