How to Use Your HSA or FSA to Save on Nutrition Coaching

HSA-or-FSA-scaled

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you might be sitting on a powerful way to save money on your nutrition coaching and not even realize it.

Many people use these accounts for things like co-pays, prescriptions, or dental cleanings, but they can also be used to cover services that support long-term health. That includes personalized nutrition coaching, depending on your plan and provider.

How to Use Your HSA or FSA to Save on Nutrition Coaching

First, What Is an HSA or FSA?

An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account you can use for qualified medical expenses if you have a high-deductible health plan. An FSA is similar but offered through your employer. In both cases, the money you contribute is tax-free and can be used for a range of health-related services and products.

Can You Use It for Coaching?

Yes. In many cases, nutrition coaching can qualify as a reimbursable expense. To do this, most providers will require what’s called a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). This is a note from a healthcare provider (usually your doctor or a nurse practitioner) stating that working with a nutrition coach supports the treatment or management of a specific condition.

Examples include:

  • Managing diabetes or prediabetes
  • Weight loss to reduce risk factors like high blood pressure
  • Support for heart disease or high cholesterol
  • Coaching to manage IBS, PCOS, or food intolerances

You don’t need a major diagnosis. If your doctor agrees that nutrition coaching is beneficial to your health, they can write the letter.

We’ve made this part easy. You can download a pre-filled Letter of Medical Necessity directly from our HSA/FSA resource page and take it to your provider to sign.

How to Get Started

  1. Contact your HSA or FSA provider to ask if nutrition coaching is covered with an LMN.
  2. Download the LMN template from our HSA/FSA page.
  3. Talk to your healthcare provider and ask them to sign it.
  4. Sign up for a coaching package.
  5. Submit your invoice and LMN to your provider for reimbursement.

At Macros Inc, we provide detailed invoices and support documentation to help make the process as smooth as possible. While we can’t guarantee your provider will approve it, many of our clients have successfully used their HSA or FSA to cover coaching services.

Why It’s Worth It

You already set aside this money for your health. Using it to work one-on-one with a coach can give you long-term tools that improve your energy, body composition, and relationship with food.

It’s not just about short-term progress. It’s about building a lifestyle you can maintain, and saving money while you do it.
