How to Do the Cable Chest Press
- Set both pulleys at chest height and grip a handle in each hand.
- Step forward into a split stance, facing away from the machine.
- Start with your hands at chest level, elbows behind your torso, feeling a stretch across the chest.
- Press both handles forward and slightly inward until your arms are straight.
- Squeeze the chest at lockout for a beat.
- Return under control until the stretch reappears, then repeat.

Do This
Form Cues
- Set the pulleys at roughly chest height and take a split stance for stability.
- Press forward and slightly inward so the handles meet in front of you.
- Keep the shoulder blades set back against the pull of the cables.
- Press to a point in front of your breastbone so the hands finish close together. That inward line is what cables do best.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Letting the shoulders roll forward at the end of the press.
- Standing square, which makes it hard to resist the backward pull.
- Locking out so hard that the elbows take the load.
- Standing too upright with feet square, which sends the tension into your balance instead of your chest.
