How to Do the Alternating Dumbbell Bench Press
- Lie on a flat bench with a dumbbell in each hand at chest height, palms facing forward.
- Press both dumbbells up to straight arms to start.
- Lower one dumbbell to your chest while the other stays locked out overhead.
- Press it back up, then lower the opposite side.
- Alternate arms rep by rep, keeping your hips and shoulders square on the bench.
- Match tempo and depth exactly on both sides.

Do This
Form Cues
- Keep the resting dumbbell locked at chest height rather than letting it drift up.
- Brace your core hard. The uneven load will try to rotate your torso.
- Match the tempo on both arms so one side does not get an easier rep.
- The still arm is working too. Keep it actively pushed toward the ceiling, not passively resting at lockout.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Letting the non-working arm creep upward, which quietly turns it into a normal press.
- Twisting the shoulders toward the pressing side instead of staying square.
- Going too heavy, which is what makes both of the above happen.
- Letting the hips twist toward the pressing side, which turns core work into wasted wobble.
