How to Do the Barbell Lunge
- Set the bar across your upper traps and step back from the rack into a hip-width stance.
- Brace, then take a controlled step forward, long enough that your front shin stays close to vertical.
- Lower straight down until your back knee hovers just above the floor.
- Push hard through the front heel to step back to the start position.
- Repeat on the other leg, alternating sides or completing all reps on one side first.
- Keep your torso tall and your eyes forward for the whole set.

Form Cues
- Step out far enough that the front shin stays close to vertical at the bottom.
- Keep the torso upright and the bar stacked over the hips.
- Push through the front heel to return to standing.
- Pause for a beat at the bottom of each rep. It kills momentum and keeps the front leg honest.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Taking a short step, which drives the knee well past the toes.
- Letting the back knee crash into the floor.
- Leaning forward as the set gets hard, which shifts the load onto the lower back.
- Letting the step length shrink as fatigue builds, which drives the knee forward and off the target muscles.
