Kettlebell Sumo Deadlift

A wide-stance deadlift using a kettlebell, targeting the quads, glutes, and adductors with an accessible setup. The kettlebell hangs between the legs in the body's natural center of gravity, which makes this one of the easiest deadlifts to perform well from the first session. It is the standard starting point for teaching the deadlift pattern before barbell work.

Do This

Form Cues

  • Take a wide stance with the toes turned out and the kettlebell between the feet.
  • Push the knees out over the toes on the way down.
  • Keep the chest up and drive the hips forward to finish.
  • Spread the floor with your feet as you stand. It keeps the knees out and the adductors working.

Avoid This

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the knees cave inward as you stand.
  • Setting the stance so wide that the hips cannot open.
  • Rounding the lower back to reach the handle.
  • Outgrowing the kettlebell and adding sloppy speed instead of progressing to a heavier bell or a barbell.
