How to Do the Barbell Rack Pull
- Set the safety pins in a rack so the bar sits just below or just above your knees.
- Grip the bar just outside your legs and set your back flat with your chest lifted.
- Squeeze the bar and your lats, then brace hard.
- Push the floor away and drive your hips through to stand tall.
- Squeeze the upper back at lockout without leaning backward.
- Lower the bar to the pins under control and reset fully before the next rep.

Do This
Form Cues
- Set the pins just below or just above the knee and keep the height consistent between sessions.
- Squeeze the shoulder blades and lats before you pull.
- Finish standing tall without leaning back at the top.
- Treat every rep from the pins like a first rep: reset the back, re-brace, then pull.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Leaning back at lockout, which does nothing except stress the lower back.
- Bouncing the bar off the pins to start each rep.
- Loading it so heavy that the back rounds the moment the bar leaves the rack.
- Living at rack-pull weights and letting the overloaded partials replace practice on the full lift.
