Standing Cable Hip Abduction

A glute medius isolation exercise using a cable to move the leg laterally away from the body. It loads sideways hip strength directly, the quality that keeps the pelvis level on single-leg movements and every stride. The range is naturally short, so strict posture and a controlled return matter more here than the number on the stack.

How to Do the Standing Cable Hip Abduction

  1. Attach an ankle strap to a low pulley and fasten it to your outside ankle.
  2. Stand side-on to the machine, working leg farthest away, and hold the frame lightly.
  3. Stand tall with your hips level.
  4. Lift the working leg straight out to the side against the cable.
  5. Squeeze the outer glute at the top for a beat.
  6. Return under control and switch sides after the set.

Do This

Form Cues

  • Stand tall with the cable strapped to the outside ankle.
  • Lift the leg out to the side and slightly behind rather than straight out.
  • Keep the standing hip stacked and steady.
  • Toes point forward the whole rep. Letting them turn out swaps the outer glute for the hip flexor.

Avoid This

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning away from the working leg to swing it higher.
  • Rotating the working foot outward, which brings the hip flexor in.
  • Using a weight that pulls the standing side out of position.
  • Leaning away from the machine to fake a bigger range, which unloads the exact muscle you came for.
