Dumbbell Arnold Press

A shoulder press variation popularized by Arnold Schwarzenegger that incorporates rotation to engage all three deltoid heads throughout the movement. Starting palms-in and rotating out as you press keeps the delts under tension through a longer arc than a standard press. It trades some load for that extra range, which makes it a second pressing movement rather than the heaviest one.

Technique

How to Do the Dumbbell Arnold Press

  1. Sit or stand holding dumbbells at shoulder height, palms facing you, elbows in front of your body.
  2. Brace your core with your ribs down.
  3. Press upward while rotating your palms to face forward.
  4. Time the rotation so it completes as your arms reach halfway up.
  5. Finish locked out overhead with palms forward.
  6. Reverse the rotation on the way down, ending palms-in at your shoulders.

Do This

Form Cues

  • Start with the palms facing you and rotate as you press, finishing with palms forward.
  • Keep the rotation smooth and continuous rather than pressing then twisting.
  • Ribs down and core braced so the lower back does not arch to reach lockout.
  • Make the press and rotation one smooth spiral rather than a lift, a twist, and another lift.

Avoid This

Common Mistakes

  • Rotating too early, which turns it into a standard dumbbell press.
  • Going heavy. This is a control exercise and the rotation loads the shoulder in a vulnerable position.
  • Letting the elbows flare wide at the bottom instead of staying in front of the body.
  • Loading it like a standard shoulder press. The rotation halves your leverage and the weight should reflect that.
