How to Do the Barbell Overhead Press
- Grip the bar just outside your shoulders and rest it across your front delts and collarbones.
- Set your feet at hip width, squeeze your glutes, and brace your core hard.
- Press the bar straight up, pulling your head back slightly to clear its path.
- Push your head through once the bar passes your face.
- Lock out with the bar stacked over your shoulders, hips, and midfoot.
- Lower under control back to the shoulders and re-brace before the next rep.

Do This
Form Cues
- Squeeze the glutes and brace before the bar leaves the shoulders.
- Move the head back out of the way, then push it through as the bar passes.
- Finish with the bar stacked over the midfoot, not out in front.
- Squeeze the glutes as hard as the bar. The locked hips are what stop the lower back from arching.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back to create a false incline.
- Leaving the head back so the bar has to travel around it.
- Pressing before the core is braced, which is where the lower back pain comes from.
- Turning grinding reps into a standing incline press by leaning further and further back.
