How to Do the Barbell Curl
- Grip a barbell underhand at shoulder width and stand tall with the bar at your thighs.
- Pin your elbows to your sides and brace your torso.
- Curl the bar up toward your shoulders without swinging.
- Squeeze the biceps hard at the top for a beat.
- Lower over two to three seconds until your arms are fully straight.
- Reset your posture before each rep.

Do This
Form Cues
- Stand tall with the elbows pinned to your ribs.
- Curl without letting the shoulders roll forward.
- Lower to full extension every rep.
- Squeeze the bar tight and lock the wrists straight. A soft grip leaks force out of every rep.
Avoid This
Common Mistakes
- Swinging the torso to start each rep.
- Letting the elbows travel forward so the front delts take over.
- Stopping halfway down and losing the stretch.
- Adding weight through body swing rather than bicep strength. If your hips start the rep, the load is wrong.
