Dumbbell Concentration Curl

A strict bicep isolation curl performed seated with the elbow braced against the inner thigh. Bracing the arm removes every source of momentum, making this the strictest curl in the library and the one where the mind-muscle connection is easiest to find. It is a finisher by nature: light weight, full range, and a hard squeeze on every rep.

How to Do the Dumbbell Concentration Curl

  1. Sit on a bench with your feet wide and a dumbbell in one hand.
  2. Lean forward and brace the back of that upper arm against the inside of your thigh.
  3. Let the arm hang fully straight with the dumbbell off the floor.
  4. Curl the dumbbell up toward your shoulder, keeping the upper arm glued to the thigh.
  5. Squeeze hard at the top for a full second.
  6. Lower slowly to a straight arm and finish the set before switching sides.

Do This

Form Cues

  • Brace the back of the upper arm against the inside of the thigh and leave it there.
  • Turn the pinky up slightly at the top for a harder contraction.
  • Lower all the way to straight before the next rep.
  • Watch the bicep work. On this exercise the visual feedback genuinely helps the contraction.

Avoid This

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the arm slide off the thigh to cheat the weight up.
  • Rocking the torso to start each rep.
  • Going heavy. This is a strict curl by design.
  • Lifting the torso to help the dumbbell up, which un-braces the arm and defeats the exercise.
