Dumbbell Preacher Curl

A bicep isolation curl using a preacher bench with a dumbbell, eliminating momentum for strict muscle activation. The pad physically prevents the elbow from moving, so every degree of the rep comes from the biceps and nowhere else. It also loads the fully stretched bottom position hard, which most free-standing curls skip past.

How to Do the Dumbbell Preacher Curl

  1. Set the preacher bench so the top of the pad sits in your armpit.
  2. Rest the back of one upper arm flat on the pad, holding a dumbbell underhand.
  3. Start from a fully straight arm without hyperextending the elbow.
  4. Curl the dumbbell up until your forearm is just short of vertical.
  5. Squeeze at the top, then lower over two to three seconds back to straight.
  6. Complete the set on one arm before switching.

Do This

Form Cues

  • Set the pad so the armpit sits against the top of it.
  • Keep the upper arm flat on the pad for the whole rep.
  • Straighten the arm fully at the bottom, slowly.
  • Own the bottom third of the rep. The stretched position is where the preacher earns its reputation.

Avoid This

Common Mistakes

  • Lifting the elbow off the pad to help the weight up.
  • Dropping the weight fast at the bottom, which stresses the elbow.
  • Sliding forward on the seat as the set goes on.
  • Loading it like a standing curl. The pad removes all your cheating options, so the honest weight is lighter.
